iPhones 2027

I was listening to John Gruber/Chance Miller on The Talk Show talking about iPhone pricing come September. I promptly stopped listening to write this post comprised of unoriginal thinking. I still find it still helps me clarify my own plans.

As a recap, here are the iPhones 17 lineup pricing in USD from last September, effectively ancient history now:

Screenshot from an earlier post of mine. I don’t know that the numbers above will hold for their upcoming lineup in view of RAMageddon. Apple has already raised prices on its devices, including Macs, iPads, TV – the device, HomePods, and Vision Pro with the notable exception of iPhone, of course.

To this end, I created a table with separate columns for best-/worst-case scenario pricing. I hope I was overly-pessimistic, but time will tell. Needless to say, I’m just a fan of the products is all.

Come September, 3 new iPhones, namely the folding iPhone, and new and improved Pro and Air models. Last year’s non-Pro and e phones will be available, but the “vanilla” and “e” line won’t be available until January, and so a big change in what was once an annual schedule:

Released Optimist Pessimist Memo
iPhone “Fold” (2027) 2026 ? ? Foldable screens are expensive.
iPhone Pro (2027) 2026 1100 1300 New and improved over last year’s 17 Pro.
iPhone Air (2027) 2026 1000 1150 New and improved over last year’s Air, which I find both groundbreaking and immature at the same time.
iPhone 17 2025 700 850
iPhone 17e 2026 500 600

(This does makes for a temporary hole in the lineup between USD 700 and 1000 {optimist}, or USD 850 1150 {pessimist} until 2027.)

And in January (or March?), the lower-cost models will be out:

Released Optimist Pessimist Memo
iPhone (2027) 2027 800 900 New and improved over its predecessor iPhone 17 (2025).
iPhone e (2027) 2027 600 650 New and improved over its predecessor iPhone 17e (2025).

And here’s my full, imaginary, lineup, sorted by price. This retains the USD 500 to 1100 (optimist), or 550 to 1300 (pessimist):

Released Optimist Pessimist
iPhone “Fold” (2027) 2026 ? ?
iPhone Pro (2027) 2026 1100 1300
iPhone Air (2027) 2026 1000 1150
iPhone (2027) 2027 800 900
iPhone 17 2025 700 850
iPhone e (2027) 2027 600 650
iPhone 17e 2026 500 550

Last but not least, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 16e may still be available for purchase, albeit via 3rd parties, and while stocks last.
